What is Magick?
“The science or art of causing change to occur in conformity with the will” - Aleister Crowley
Magick is making something that you want happen, to create your own reality. Words and action affecting physical reality.
The history of Magick
Aleister Crowley (1875-1947) founded the religion of Thelema. He was largely associated with modern occultism and influenced other religious founders such as Wicca's Gerald Gardner and Scientology's L. Ron Hubbard.
Crowley started using the word "magick" and gave several reasons why. The most often mentioned reason is to differentiate what he was doing from stage magic. However, such usage is unnecessary. Academics discuss magic in ancient cultures all the time, and no one thinks they are talking about the Celts pulling rabbits out of hats.
But Crowley gave several other reasons why he used the term "magick," and these reasons are often ignored. The central reason was that he considered magick to be anything that moves a person close to fulfilling their ultimate destiny, which he called one's True Will.
By this definition, magick doesn't have to be metaphysical. Any action, mundane or magical that helps fulfill one's True Will is magick. Casting a spell to get someone's attention is most certainly not magick.
Why we need Magick?
Real magick is the art of subtly changing reality to reflect the practitioner’s wishes. For example, if you want to pursue a certain career, magick can help with those all-important serendipitous circumstances that are really doorways to your desire. Magick can invisibly manipulate circumstances in your favor. Magick is the key to making energy work for you, instead of you trying to push through the dead weight of social control. This universal energy is your leverage to success. It is the key to a happy, rewarding, fruitful life.
Here are some of the ways in which you can use magick:
- To change your own attitudes and perspectives.
- To increase your confidence
- To open your mind to possibilities
- To alter, improve and change circumstances
- To add an extra dimension to your life
- Attract love and improve relationships
- Improve career prospects and increase success
- For healing and protection.
How does Magick Work
Magick is simply the impressing of will upon energy. It’s based on the premise that thoughts and feelings are, in themselves, energy. If you want to go into this deeper, look into the Law of Attraction. However, many proponents of LoA lack understanding of this Law of the Universe because they believe that there is goodness in positivity and not-so-good in negativity. They are wrong.
As far as the working of magick is concerned, Universal energy does not care whether your emotion is good or bad. What does matter is intensity. During a magickal ritual, it helps to move your emotions from negative to positive as you visualize the outcome. That’s because it has a beneficial effect on your wellbeing.
Think of the sacrificial rituals of less enlightened societies of old; the kind that used human beings. These rituals had power because they were fueled by the fear of the poor person facing torture and death. It didn’t matter to those witchdoctors and chieftains that the emotion was as negative as it gets. All they knew was that powerful magick would result.
There are different typesof Magick that have been widely used since ancient history.
- Sympathetic: based on Law of Attraction, ‘like attracts like’. So the use of pink quartz for love, or a green candle for money. Also called ‘correspondences’.
- Sigil: personally created symbols to represent a desired outcome.
- Ritual: a series of actions designed to produce a result. Usually combined with a spoken request.
- Poppets: the use of a doll or some other representation of a human being to bring about a change.
- Candles: to aid in the sending of a spell out to the universe.
- Written: sometimes the most effective spells are those that are written down. Can be combined with any other type of magick.
Science and Magick
Magick is another word for transformation, creation, and manifestation. It is a tool we use to act on the subtle - or energy, or quantum - level of reality.
The quantum level is the causal realm. It is the subtle influences at the quantum level that decide which way reality will go.
So if you want to manifest something into ordinary reality, you start by stimulating the quantum realm to favour that potentiality.
That is real magick in action.
Science has known since early in the last century that the material world is made up not of matter, but of energy. And while matter is fairly stable, energy is very fluid.
So it is difficult to build a house or job or lover with your bare hands if the causal realm hasn't already foreseen these things, but it is much easier to create an energy wave that will lead to a house or job or lover coming to you. (Of course, you still will need to use your body to manifest them.)
That's what real magick is all about.
In magick we transform our reality, and ourselves, to match our choices.
